Where to Find Help with Your Parenting Plan

The state of Florida pushes for parents who are planning on getting a divorce to establish a parenting plan. But what is this exactly? What does the Court and the state have to do with how you function as a parent?

Parenting PlanThese are both great questions, but a parenting plan doesn’t have anything to do with how you function as a parent so much as it details how you will work out child sharing responsibilities with your ex spouse.

What Does a Parenting Plan Cover?

For example, a parenting plan details and outlines the following:

  • Timesharing schedule (which days, times, weekends, etc. one parent will have access to the child(ren)
  • The expenses each parent will be responsible for—(health care, extracurricular activities, education expenses, etc.)—and which expenses and costs will be split between both parents
  • How each parent will communicate with his or her child(ren) and with the other parent

Of course each family’s situation is different, so there is no one-size-fits-all plan that works for every family and every child. This is just an example of what a parenting plan will outline.

If you are having difficulty drafting your parenting plan with your ex spouse—either due to differing schedules or the inability to communicate or reach an agreement or compromise—then it may be best to consult with an attorney.

If you go to court for your divorce without an attorney and without a parenting plan nailed down, then the court will likely establish one for you and your ex spouse.

Note: The court is NOT interested in why you are getting a divorce nor does it have any interest in getting involved in the battle of who is a better parent. The court will establish a parenting plan that best suits the children and will be in their best interests only.

How Can an Attorney Help?

If you are going through a divorce, you may be wondering how an attorney can help you, or you may be worried about spending money on an attorney.

However, a compassionate and understanding family law attorney will take the time to talk to you about your situation and your concerns about your family’s future. Then, an attorney will present a case to a mediator in order to secure your family’s needs for the future.
